new builds - a blank canvas !

A new property built in the vernacular Cotswold style and a blank canvas for the garden ! The design needed to ensure that the best sun filled spaces were utilised for relaxing and dining whilst creating good movement around the garden. The striking borders help to soften the views between spaces. Another important aspect was to position lighting to enhance features at night but also to provide soft lighting for entertaining and relaxing in the evening.

This new property's garden was on a slope that descended towards a stream. There was no possibility of utilising the opposite bank. The position of the existing fencing made the garden look smaller than it actually was. The challenge was to provide spaces and movement around the garden that gave different views and to use the steep slope and the stream to advantage. The award winning final design increased the size of the internal garden space, incorporated a split terrace, two sets of steps, one curved, that led to paths that joined at a bridge across the stream. Terraced borders have helped to define interesting spaces in the garden. Oak weaved fencing has been introduced which gives a sense of elegance as well as being functional. Soft lighting has been installed to accentuate the paths, steps, bridge and feature plants. The area on the other side of the stream is an evening sitting area where the owners can now look back on their truly beautiful garden.

The clients for this property required a low cost but effective and contemporary design that was easy to maintain. A rectilinear approach with raised borders made from treated wood, a solid gravel path and different textured planting has changed this untended patch into a stunning garden. Minimal uplighting has been introduced to give an effective outlook on the structural planting in the evening.
